Round 2 of the Pennants season was held yesterday with the Club securing 2 hard fought wins and one loss on the big boards.
The 3s took on Engadine at home and it was a powerful performance by Craig Scott’s team of Shaun Dooley, James Warburton and Jasen Dawson with a 28 to 13 win that secured the big board 57 to 54.
The 7’s also played at home and faced Moorefield, who jumped out of the blocks and ended up winning 61 to 48 and securing a 9 – 1 big board win. Special mention to the team of John French, Bill Teasdale ,Mike Newton and Keith Howell. They were behind by 3 with 2 ends to play and scored 6 to secure a 20 to 17 win over the opposition. Well done boys.
The 6’s headed to Moorefields and were greeted by a green running at 18 to 19 seconds – very, very slick! Moorefields are hard to beat anytime, let alone at home and on a quick green, however the 6’s squad lifted, encouraged each other, gave away minimal shots and after 4 hours of play came away winners on the big board 49 to 42. Gary Allen’s team of Viti, Grant and Macca were again the standout winning their rink 17 to 9 achieving an 80% success rate over the last 5 ends. That’s how you secure big board wins!!
A shout out of thanks to the 6’s Team Manager, Jann Hancock – who wore her “managerial shoes” and kept the troops in line and focused on their game.
Also, thanks to Bev and Heather for making the sandwiches back at Sylvania, Huckey for managing the 7’s and looking after the money, and our fabulous green keepers Jacob and Shooey for their work.
Next week sees the 3’s and 6’s at home with the 7’s travelling to Hillsdale to play on their artificial green. Arrive there early all 7’s players and get a good pre game roll up on an unfamiliar surface; you will find it different from Caringbah.
Afternoon Bowlers. The Pennants season is here and with 3 teams entered, enthusiasm levels are high. The Club’s 6’s and 7’s started their campaign at home with impressive wins over Olds Park, 76 to 43 and Ramsgate RSL, 70 to 43.
Stand out rinks were Gary Allen’s team in the 6’s who won 30 to 11 and Alistair Daley’s team who, after dropping a 6 early on, finished very strongly with a 26 to 19 win.
In the 7’s Keith Howell’s rink put themselves in front early and were never headed, finishing 26 to 12 over their opposition.
Both the 6’s & 7’s came away with a maximum of 10 points from the big board.
The 3’s travelled to take on a very strong Taren Point squad on their home green. The boys went down swing 59 to 63 – a frustratingly close 4 point margin and winning 1.5 rinks.
It was a strong start for the Club, winning 10.5 rinks out of 12.
Winners of the last 5 ends competition were Viti, Grant, Macca and Gary Allen – their team scored 11 shots in 3 of the last 5 ends and only gave away 2 ends of 1 shot each. Outstanding effort!
Rd 2 this weekend sees the 3’s and 7’s at home with the 6’s away.
Come down to the Club on Saturday afternoon and support the players – it is really encouraging to see a big cohort of Sylvania spectators applauding the efforts of our teams.
And remember, the drills session on Thursday afternoon from 3pm with a quick Pennants meeting starting at 4.30pm. All Pennant players & reserves are encouraged to attend”.
